+ Impact of VAT Reform on Oil and Power

"Gaano kalaki ang itaas ng
gasolina dahil sa VAT"?

 Outline
o
Impact on Consumers
oImpact on Oil and Power
oImpact on Small and Medium-Scale Businesses
oImpact on the Poor

How much VAT can be generated from lifting these exemptions?

"To lessen the impact of VAT on socially-sensitive petroleum products like diesel, kerosene and LPG, the government has reduced the corresponding excise taxes and import tariffs".

Since VAT is a consumption tax, the burden will be shouldered mostly by higher income groups. In fact, the richest 30 percent of Filipino families account for about 65 percent of the total petroleum consumption in the country while the poorest only account for about eight percent of the total consumption. The imposition of VAT on petroleum will also help the country rationalize excessive use of petroleum products, which can lead to savings on oil imports, lesser harm to the environment and to people's health.

ENERGY TIPS

GAS TIPS

  • Turn off lights when not in use.
  • Use fluorescent instead of incandescent lights. A fluorescent lamp can last 10 times longer than an incandescent one. It also produces five times as much light and stays cooler.
  • Clear bulbs give you more light than frosted bulbs.
  • Select the proper size of air conditioning unit for your room. Choose a unit with the highest energy efficient ratio and the smallest capacity that will meet your needs.
  • When using a washing machine. Wash only when you have a full load but do not overload.
  • Don't keep you refrigerator or freezer too cold. Defrost regularly. Frost buildup decreases energy efficiency of the unit. Make sure refrigerator door seals are airtight.
  • Cover liquids and wrap foods stored in the refrigerator. Uncovered foods releases moisture and make the compressor work harder.
  • Hang clothes waiting to be ironed. Do not fold or bundle them in a hamper as more creases would mean more ironing time.
  • Adjust the iron heat according to the material you are ironing.
  • As much as possible, try to iron a large number of clothes at one time. Start from light materials using low temperature, then move to heavier fabrics at highest temperature.
  • Check you tire pressure. Low tire pressure will make the tires drag and use more gas.
  • Give your car regular tune-ups. A lot of gas is wasted when an engine grinds for seconds before firing up.
  • Clean your trunk of unnecessary load. Excess weight consumes extra gas.
  • Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle when buying a car.
  • As much as possible, avoid rush-hour traffic. Huge amount of fuel are wasted in "stop-and-go" traffic.
  • If the weather is cool enough, minimize the use of air conditioning but roll up your window when driving on a highway. The wind drag lowers your mileage.
  • Consolidate your errands and plan your route.
  • Drive smoothly. A steady pace saves gas while speeding up reduces fuel economy.
  • Reduce idling.
  • Accelerate and brake gently but steadily.
